prompt: failure to communicate. Prompted in turn by the movie quote from Cool Hand Luke (1967): "What we've got here is, failure to communicate"

I hope this essay communicates. Otherwise, it's a failure.

People are always talking to each other. But does anyone listen? It doesn't seem so. So what can we do?

Maybe we each can find a therapist. This person can start by listening to us, and thus create the delusion that someone at least is listening. Then we could at least talk to people and believe they are listening. Maybe if we all just stay in that dream, we can be happy, even if no-one ever really listens.

What? That isn't satisfactory?? Well, you can just not listen to this idea, and ignore it, and that at least would dispel the illusion that we are listening. At least we listened for a while to the therapist TELL us we were all listening to each other.

Then again, there is the problem of whether people actually have something worth communicating. But if we don't listen, how do we know whether it's worthwhile to listen to what someone says or not? So, the therapist says, try listening to see. And try at least to examine what YOU want to say, and maybe you can discover whether what you want to say is worth saying. Listen to yourself too!
